Canada’s dairy farmers welcome new trade Bill
Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg farmers have welcomed the passage of Bill C-282, which would safeguard the sustainability of Canadian dairy, poultry and egg production by preventing further market access concessions in future trade agreements.
“We now call on all Senators to show their support for Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg farmers and the millions of Canadians who value fresh, local, made-in-Canada food items by ensuring Bill C-282’s passage in the Senate and into law,” they stated.
The organisations continued to say that enacting Bill C-282 into law would not only strengthen and protect Canada’s essential system of supply management but that it would “present the opportunity to champion growth within Canada’s agricultural sector and support thousands of jobs and economic activity across our country”.
This Bill, they said, has been carefully studied by the House of Commons Standing Committee of International Trade and would safeguard the sustainability of the poultry, egg and dairy industries in the country, which, as noted in the statement, contributes CAN$30.1 billion to the GDP and supports over 339,000 jobs across Canada.
