Novus celebrates new thinking in dairy production during EAAP

At the 75th European Association for Animal Production annual meeting this month, Novus will present the EAAP Young Scientists Award to Markos Managos, a doctoral student in the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science. Novus dairy experts were impressed by his research ‘Greenhouse gas emissions from dairy cows fed best practice diets’, which Managos presented at EAAP in 2023. Managos’ field of study provides insights into reducing the environmental impact of dairy production. He says dairy ration formulation is crucial for animal productivity and farm economics, but the environmental footprint of feed ingredients must also be considered.

SenseHub Dairy Youngstock upgrade for pre-weaned calves housed in groups

MSD Animal Health has announced an update to its SenseHub Dairy Youngstock application plan, which makes it fully compatible with all nipple-fed calves from birth. The system uses an electronic ear tag to monitor the behavioural patterns of calves from birth to 12 months of age to identify any signs of potential ill health or opportunities for long-term welfare improvements. Previously, the Youngstock plan – which was officially launched in the UK in March 2024 – was only compatible for pre-weaning, nipple-fed calves housed in single occupancy hutches, or for weaned calves housed in group pens. The latest update extends the system’s remit to also include pre-weaning, nipple-fed calves housed in groups.

Bovilis Cryptium is indicated for the active immunisation of pregnant heifers and cows to raise antibodies in colostrum against Gp40 of Cryptosporidium parvum
