In a first of its kind agreement in China, dsm-firmenich will tackle the dairy sector’s methane emissions with its feed additive, Bovaer.

dsm-firmenich will work together with China Modern Dairy Holdings, a dairy farming operator and raw milk producer in China. The parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance sustainability of Chinese dairy farming through the implementation of Bovaer.

Methane reduction plans in China

In its sustainability efforts, in November 2023, China launched the ‘Methane Emission Control Action Plan’ aimed at significantly reducing methane emissions across sectors, including agriculture, in China. As a leading dairy producer in China, China Modern Dairy Holdings is supporting the implementation of this action plan across its operations by supplying milk with a lower environmental footprint to customers like China Mengniu Dairy, a top-10 global dairy company.

Approval in the coming years

“We are excited to commence preparations to enter the Chinese dairy market. We are on track to submit our Chinese registration dossier for Bovaer later this year and hope to gain approval in the coming years," said Mark van Nieuwland (first row right side in photo), senior vice president Bovaer at dsm-firmenich.

The collaboration with Modern Dairy will help us to tailor our offering and go-to-market model for the Chinese market, and we are happy to work with the industry leaders on this topic. Preparation work will start now, while we await local market authorisation for commercialisation.”

Through the implementation of Bovaer, methane emissions can be reduced by approximately 30% for dairy. Bovaer is already commercially available in 65 countries including EU member states, the UK, the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, most of Latin America, and select other markets.
