Jersey crowned ‘Supreme Champion’ at the World Dairy Expo

In an exciting round of the annual competitions at the World Dairy Expo, the ‘Supreme Champion’ title went to a Jersey cow named ‘Stoney Point Joel Bailey’ owned by Vierra Dairy Farms of California. It is the first time a Jersey has achieved this accolade.

This cow also won Grand Champion of the International Jersey Show for the second year in a row. Official judge Ryan Krohlow of Wisconsin, and associate judge Jean-Phillippe Charest of Quebec, examined almost 400 Jersey entries this year.

Second place (Reserve) Supreme Champion went to the cow that also earned Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show, ‘Premium Apple Crisp Lilly-Red’ of Illinois.

Among the many other breeding awards at the Expo are and winners of the International and International Junior Holstein, Guernsey, Brown Swiss, Milking Shorthorn and Ayrshire Shows.

Another woman winner

Joan Seidel was the fifth woman to win the Duncan MacKenzie Award in the past 33 years, an award given to a person who “brings forth strength, character and an undeniable passion for the dairy industry”. Seidel spends nearly 300 days on the road working with dairy farmers to prepare cattle for shows, sales and classifications.

Meanwhile, Tom Cull was presented the 82nd Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the US. With his wife Kelli and other team members, Cull has exhibited 4 National Supreme Champions, 4 World Dairy Expo Grand Champions, 4 Royal Winter Fair (Canada) Grand Champions, 4 North American International Livestock Expo Grand Champions, over 180 All-American nominations and over 80 All-Canadian nominations.

2024 World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest

In its 21st incarnation, the 2024 version of this competition featured 93 classes of dairy products with hundreds of products competing in total. The awards are presented by the Wisconsin Dairy Product Association.

The grand champions and the first, second and third-place winners for each class receive trophies, medals and ribbons at a reception, with the first-place winner’s products auctioned to raise funds for dairy education scholarship programmes.

The Grand Champion in the Cheese and Butter category was Pure Maple Mascarpone by Schuman Cheese of Wisonsin. It is described as having ‘a rich, robust pure maple syrup taste with sweet caramel notes.

It was created and produced at Schuman’s Lake Country Dairy, a 54,000-ft2 (5,000 sqm) production facility that has produced many award-winning types of cheese. This plant was also recognised as the ‘2018 Dairy Plant of the Year’ by Dairy Foods magazine.

In the Ice Cream, Sherbet, Frozen Yogurt, and Gelato category, the Grand Champion award went to ‘Classic Lemon Bar Ice Cream’ from Umpqua Dairy in Roseburg, Oregaon. It’s described as a zesty lemon ice cream swirled with creamy lemon revel and bites of lemon shortbread.
